To bring out a brief history about it, System Administrator Day (also known as Sysadmin Day, SysAdminDay, SAD or SAAD), is an annual event started by system administrator Ted Kekatos back in July 28, 2000. It is a famous day to show appreciation for the work and achievments of sysadmins and other IT workers. It is celebrated on the last Friday in July.
This special event is inspired by the Hewlett-Packard magazine advertisement in which a system administrator is presented with flowers and fruit-baskets by graceful co-workers as a sign of thanks for installing new printers.
The official SysAdmin Day website includes many suggestions for the proper observation of the holiday. Most common is cake or ice cream or other treats like:
- Pizza
- Cards
- Gifts
- Words of gratitude
- Custom t-shirts celebrating the epic greatness of your SysAdmin(s)
- Balloons
- Streamers

The holiday has been recognized and promoted by many IT professional organizations, the League of Professional System Administrators, SAGE/USENIX and SNIPhub.
